F/W 2019 Jewelry Trends: Padlocks

Even when we don't consider ourselves "trendy" those seasonal runway-inspired styles can easily find their way into our wardrobes. This also, of course, applies to our jewelry boxes as well and this year
there's no shortage of styles including a focus on anklets, gold hoops, chunky gold chains, rainbow gem rings, and pearls.

Padlocks are also iconic this fall. They're showing up crystal-encrusted, tiny and cute, large and bold, and in gold and silver. With pave so prevalent right now in commercial jewelry and charms, you're very likely to see some interesting padlock charm designs.

Some may be wondering what, if anything, they are supposed to symbolize. The most common perception is that they symbolize love and commitment and the strength of the bond between two people. This is particularly true in charm sets that incorporate hearts. Suffice it to say, this isn't a  new concept as this trend dates back many years even before the Victorian era where they seemed to really take off in Western culture.
The Chinese version of lock charms dates back even further and have their own interesting traditions associated with them and served the purpose of "locking" the wearer to life.

Along with the lock charms, you may also see keys. Keys in jewelry can represent concepts such as importance, greatness, the proverbial key to your heart, or the key to something new (opportunities, beginnings, etc.). In this way, it might be a good idea to wear a key charm on a necklace if you're looking for a change or new opportunities! Keys have also been known to represent knowledge, success, and freedom.

A small collection of padlock-inspired jewelry will be available in the shop starting today! Check it out!

  1. Interesting about the origin of padlocks. I was in Torun, Poland a couple of years ago and there was an entire fence covered in padlocks that had been left there by couples in love. Most of them wrote their initials on the locks.

I think I have a couple of padlocks in my stash along with quite a few keys. I may have to try my hand at making padlock jewelry. Your pieces are beautiful - very romantic and elegant!
