September Birthstone: Sapphire

Happy September!
Tis the season of back to school, pumpkin-spice everything, too-soon holiday merchandising and welcoming cooler temperatures as fall approaches.

For those born in this busy month, they have the honor of having the regal sapphire as their birthstone. In honor of this month's birthstone, I have a small sapphire collection in the shop made with sapphire gemstone beads.

Some interesting facts about this month's star gem:

  • Sapphire is the gem form of the mineral corundum which also produces ruby.
  • Sapphires come in many colors but the red gem variety of corundum is called ruby.
  • Corundum is extremely hard, almost as durable as diamond, and so it's used in emery as an abrasive.
  • Fine rubies and sapphires can come from Myanmar, India, and Sri Lanka.
  • Corundum is even used in electronics!
In celebration of September's birthstone, this month I will be introducing a small collection of sterling silver jewelry made with sapphire gemstone beads.
